Auto dealers still question LG Boulevard plan

By Suzy Ramirez

Armed with pictures and improvements they had made since their previous presentation, the General Plan Committee shared the "Vision of Los Gatos Boulevard" plan with Los Gatos residents and business owners at a special meeting June 18. Planners also attempted to address confusion about the funding and estimated time frame of proposed boulevard renovations, and exactly what changes are expected for the boulevard itself.

Objections and comments from some 35 Los Gatans who attended were heard and considered, but not all business owners are satisfied with the boulevard plan.

According to assistant planner Kristine Syskowski, the meeting, regardless of the objections, went more smoothly than a similar forum held last year.

The plan, which offers a pedestrian-friendly parkway and clusters of businesses and mini-parks near the sidewalk, has undergone revisions over the past year as planners attempt to win over its opponents.

Syskowski said the committee realized there was confusion regarding the plan, so revisions and graphics were brought forward at the meeting. "These changes make the plan clearer and easier to understand in regards to what it embodies."

Those business owners who opposed the plan said a boulevard is a place for commercial use, and the proposed renovations, regardless of graphics, will hinder their business.

Town planners who presented the plan at a public meeting more than a year ago were surprised by the strong opposition presented by car dealers who do business on the boulevard.

Harlan McHugh, of McHugh Lincoln Mercury of Los Gatos, said the boulevard is "not a place to walk your dog."

"[Car dealerships] need more visibility in order to successfully market our merchandise," McHugh said. "There is still a lot of vision in the plan, and our concerns as business owners have not changed a bit."

Many in the audience said it was unclear whether the town's goal was to create a place where families can socialize, bicycle and skateboard or a place where people can move safely on the sidewalks.

Syskowski said the plan will create a place for both social gathering and the movement of people.

At this time, the boulevard plan is still in draft form. The document and graphics--incorporating changes recommended at this meeting-- will be presented to the Planning Commission in August. Pending the commission's approval, the Los Gatos Town Council is set to vote on the plan in September.
