County schools get library grants

More than 100 Santa Clara County public schools have been awarded grants of $4,792 from the California School Library Protection Fund.

The grants are a result of Budget Act legislation and taxpayer donations. Local schools that will receive grants are elementaries Lakeside, Loma Prieta, Lexington and Louise Van Meter, along with Fisher Middle School. The grant funds, available through June 1998, may be used only for library resources and automation software and not for equipment, staff development, supplies or staffing.

Tapestry in Talent holds poster contest

Tapestry in Talent is now accepting entries for the 1997 Festival of the Arts Poster Contest.

K-8 students may submit their poster creations with the theme of "Art is..." on 11-by-17-inch paper. The poster must include the words "1997 Festival of the Arts" on the front side. All entries must include the artist's full name, age, address, phone number and school attended. July 31 is the deadline for entries.

Prizes will be awarded in three divisions: kindergarten to second grade, third to fifth grade and sixth to eighth grade. Prizes include fabric screen printing kits, painting sets, watercolor kits, aqua stick sets and scratchboard sets. Winners will be notified by August 15.

Redistricting committee reschedules meeting

The Santa Clara County Committee on School District Organization has canceled its July 23 meeting and rescheduled it for Aug. 27 at 6 p.m. The location has not yet been determined.

Larry Shirey, senior research analyst for the Santa Clara County Office of Education, said the committee "plans to discuss fewer and more specific scenarios" at the August meeting.

The committee held a public forum June 19 at Monta Vista High School in which six possible redistricting scenarios were discussed for local school districts.

UCSB announces dean's honors list

Three Los Gatos residents are among those selected for the dean's honors list at UC-Santa Barbara for the spring quarter.

Erin Boortz, an anthropology major; Hans Heller, in the Letters and Science Program; and Brian Reynolds, a history major, each earned the qualifying grade-point average of 3.75 on 12 or more graded units.
