NEWS BRIEFS

Highway 85 Bridge jumper survives

A 25-year-old San Jose man is in critical condition following a July 6 jump from the Winchester Boulevard overpass crossing Highway 85.

At 5:11 p.m., Los Gatos police joined California Highway Patrol officers in responding to the site of what they called an apparent suicide attempt, based on statements from friends and witnesses. They said the man was involved in a verbal dispute with a friend just minutes before he purposefully jumped off the bridge, landing on the center shoulder near the northbound lanes.

The man was taken by ambulance to Valley Medical Center for treatment of head trauma, a broken pelvis and a possible broken neck. His name has not been released because of the apparent suicide factor.

Healthcare discussion set for The Terraces

Two controversial initiatives on this year's ballot dealing with managed health care will be the focus of a special discussion panel of doctors at The Terraces of Los Gatos, 1 p.m. July 24.

The Patients Rights Initiative and the Patient Protection Act would regulate and put many restrictions on HMOs in an effort to curb the impact of HMO cost-cutting on patients.

The discussion is to be held in the Glenn Rouse Assembly Hall at The Terraces, 800 Blossom Hill Road.
