Performing at 5 p.m. July 21 for Music in the Plaza is the Praise Band, made up of current and alumni members of the Light and Power Production Company of the Calvary Church of Los Gatos. The company began in 1981 as a high school-age summer choir. Since then, the group has taken several forms, most often an 80-voice choreographed choir, dance and drama troupe, which has traveled to Australia and throughout the United States, often breaking up into smaller groups. The Praise Band formed as an offshoot in 1992 to offer a new and modern expression of worship. With various guitars, synthesizers, saxophones and percussion, Praise Band singers perform contemporary gospel, from rock to ballads. Some music is original, although most is gathered from various sources, then rearranged and personalized through jam sessions and rehearsals.
