Canines find it hard to pass local diner
By Mary Ann Cook
FOR THE CANINE POPULACE: Gilley's owner Andres Berman puts out fresh water and dog biscuits for those padding along Santa Cruz Avenue and scrambles up eggs for the homeless as well. "A lot of our customers are dog owners, so we figure we need to be dog friendly, child friendly, people friendly," say staffers of the diner.
PINK RIBBON WALK: Claudia Brown of Los Gatos is one of 3,000 hikers who will spend July 27-29 in the Avon Breast Cancer walk to raise awareness and money to detect and treat the disease. The walk covers 60 miles in three days--from San Jose to San Francisco. Participants have mobile support from dozens of volunteers. Such support includes catered meals, hot showers and medical services. The hikers will sleep in tents and get water and snack stops along the way. Breast cancer is the leading cause of death in women ages 40-55.
ABROAD TO ADOPT: Those who work at the Travel Store in Los Gatos note that a good many customers nowadays are traveling not for entertainment and enlightenment, but to increase their family. Recent local travelers have journeyed to Romania, Russia and China to adopt babies. The Rumanian adopter even brought her baby in for all to admire. It's a phenomenon of the times, evidently.
GOOD WORKS: The local National Assistance League chapter has been in business for less than a year--October it was official--but already it's having an impact. Members go to senior centers to befriend and help with crafts, games and serving at parties. Its main project, however, is Operation School Bell. The club will outfit 50 youngsters from needy families living in the Los Gatos mountains with school clothes by September. An informational meeting will be held July 31 at 9:30 a.m. in Faith Lutheran Church in Los Gatos. For information, contact Jan Ehrhardt, 408.356.4274, or Shirley Johnson, 408.867.2181.
PATRIOTIC DECOR: Time-Out Clothing won first prize in the business category of the Beautification Committee's 4th of July competition. Second prize went to A Matter of Taste; and third prize was captured by Petroglyph. Honorable mentions went to Tassels, Jennifer Croll, the Maid's Quarters and the Meadows.
Residences that caught the committee's eye were at 16373 Englewood, 1st; 75 Alpine, 2nd; and 131 Massol, 3rd. An honorable mention went to 238 Loma Alta. Best neighborhood cited was the whole length of Pleasantview.
CORRECTION: Jan Morris is the new president of the Los Gatos Lions, not Jan Miller, as reported here. When she operated Jan's Magic Comb in the Eureka Building some years back, Morris saved my head many a time, so imagine my chagrin not getting her name right. My correspondent is Gail Miller. Must have had a synapse lapse. Sorry, Jan.
MAN OF YEAR: Named Man of the Year by the Redondo Chamber of Commerce recently was John Mercant. Mercant, a lawyer, has served as president of the Chamber of Commerce, president of Rotary and initiated many social changes in those positions, such as aid to battered women. He is the son of Marge and Tony Mercant of Los Gatos. At Leigh High School he was a National Merit Scholarship winner.
BOUND FOR BIG APPLE: Here's someone who's on her toes literally and figuratively. She's Amelia Brain, 13, of Monte Sereno who won a chance to study with the Joffrey Ballet School in New York City for four weeks this summer. Amelia will be an 8th grader at Fisher School come fall. She's studied ballet for seven years at Dance Theatre International in San Jose. The school's director, Magdalene Parungao-Ferla, encouraged Amelia to audition last January.
FASHION SHOW FOR DENTAL HEALTH: Two Saratogans will head the fashion show that benefits the Hutto Pediatric Dental Clinic at University of Pacific's School of Dentistry. Children who can't afford dental fees are treated at this clinic, and a biennial fund-raiser is held.
The two are Bonnie Kwong, director of the Pacific Dental Education Foundation, and Susan Bittner, dentist and president of UOP's Children's Dental Health Care League. The event will be held Aug. 18 at the San Francisco Fairmont, and a silent auction precedes the luncheon.
Honorary chairmen Roger Craig and Willie Brown will be among those modeling, plus Dr. Jimiann Wong of Los Gatos and Debbie Follmer of Saratoga. Tickets are $75, $100 and $125. For more information, call 408.867.5343.
PURSUIT OF THE TRIVIAL: Homicidal Fried Eggs, Steve's Ex-Wife, and the Sopworth Camels are a few of the dedicated teams that play a form of trivial pursuit on Tuesday night at 8:30 p.m. at Britannia Arms on De Anza Boulevard.
Some 17 teams compete in three divisions, including my team, the Sliding Snails. It takes our aged brains considerably longer to answer questions than the dot-comers surrounding us. Steve Kraft dreams up the weekly quizzes, designed to stumble and amaze.
