Time is now to file for town council

Los Gatos residents who would like to be part of the action-packed world of local government can now file their candidacy for town council.

The formal filing period began July 17 and continues to Aug. 11. A five-day filing extension is also available for those waiting to see if any incumbents decide to run. Candidates have to pay close to $325 to file, of which the town collects $25. The rest is paid to the county registrar for the cost of printing the candidate's statement in both English and Spanish.

The terms of council members Jan Hutchins and Linda Lubeck expire in November, and neither have indicated a desire to run for re-election.

    Town needs to fill vacancies

The filing period for a slew of vacancies on various town commissions, committees and boards draws to a close July 28.

Interested citizens of Los Gatos can apply for vacancies on the arts commission, board of appeals, county council on aging, the library board, trails and bikeways committee, parking commission, redevelopment committee and the planning commission.

Call the town clerk's office, at 408.354.6834.

Sierra Club to hold slide show

The Guadalupe Regional Group of the Sierra Club will present a free narrated slide show called, Battle for the Everglades, on July 20, at 7:30 p.m. in the Saratoga Community Library, at 13650 Saratoga Ave.

The Everglades is a habitat for 14 of America's endangered wildlife species, some of which will be featured in the slide presentation.
