PAC's 'Bye Bye Birdie'

'35 Years of Collecting Los Gatos' exhibit

    The Prowler

This week's column is about discovering new things--an appropriate topic for us cats, who are known to be curious creatures.

Similarly, curious children will have a blast at Borders Explorers Summer Camp, a free program run at Borders Books, Music & Cafe in the Old Town Shopping Center. Each supervised workshop combines fun with education.

Here's a sneak peek at the next few classes: On July 24, at 3:30 p.m., kids will discuss buoyancy and build a floating mechanism. On July 26, at 9:30 a.m., the theme is musical instruments: kids will learn about vibrations and sounds and will make a drum, shaker or guitar. The last class for the month is July 31, at 3:30 p.m., in which kids will make their own bug and learn about insects. More classes to come in August! For info, call 408.395.6622.

Curious adults may be interested in a presentation on the Clean Safe Creeks and Natural Flood Protection Program, presented by the Santa Clara Valley Water District at the July 25 meeting of the Santa Clara Valley Gem & Mineral Society. The event takes place at 7:45 p.m. at the Belwood Recreation Center, 100 Belwood Gateway in Los Gatos. It also includes an identification session on rock specimens and a display of gems, lapidary crafts and jewelry by society members. Admission is free. Call 408.265.1422 to learn more.

Speaking of cool displays, don't miss the Discovery Shop of Los Gatos' second annual Christmas in July sale on July 21 and 22, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and July 23, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. A wide array of home and tree decorations and holiday cards will be available, with all proceeds benefiting the American Cancer Society. The Discovery Shop is at 39 E. Main St.
