Congregation Shir Hadash names a program director

Rabbi Jon Sommer, a graduate of UC-Santa Cruz and an ordained Rabbi from Hebrew Union College in Ohio, is the new program director for Congregation Shir Hadash, located at 16555 Shannon Road in Los Gatos.

Formerly a student rabbi at congregations in Indiana, Wyoming and Ohio, he has also served as a rabbinical chaplain candidate in the U. S. Air Force Reserve. In addition to pulpit responsibilities, Sommer has experience as a teacher and counselor as well as in developing community service programs.

Sommer co-founded and directed Our Forgotten People International, which provides religious services, books and traditional meals for Jewish prison inmates and offers family assistance and various forms of post-release advocacy.

At Shir Hadash, Sommer will be responsible for supporting social programs for singles, couples and families and developing programs for empty-nesters and college students. He also works with the Caring Committee and with special-needs groups such as children of aging parents or recently divorced parents.
