The Prowler

Music, food, exercise and games--Los Gatos has it all.

Take the rock band dredg. It may have been a typical dime-a-dozen garage band at one time, but not anymore. Made up of Los Gatos High School grads Dino Campanella, Mark Engles, Gavin Hayes and Drew Roulette, dredg has played gigs at local clubs for several years.

The next chance to hear the local boys live is the eve of July 24 at the Cactus Club in San Jose. Three other bands are also on the bill, so it should be an earful. Incidentally, the Prowler does not make typos; the band's name is indeed lowercase and misspelled on purpose.

Remember last week this cat mentioned a gastronomic tour of the Los Gatos Farmers' Market on July 19? There's another food-related special event on July 26: Alain Staebler, proprietor of Village Lane's own Cafe Marcella, demonstrates his cooking skills and offers free samples to shoppers.

For those who'd rather burn instead of earn calories, the Loma Prieta Community Recreation Program has its seventh annual Summit Challenge happening the morning of Aug. 1. The event features 10K and 5K runs and a two-mile walk, with prizes for winners in each category. Preregistration is $20, or $22 on race day. Call 353-2834 for more info.

The Prowler didn't know Grand Central Station was in Los Gatos. Actually, it's the name of a day program for kids entering grades 4-8, sponsored by the Presbyterian Church of Los Gatos. Children of all backgrounds are welcome to participate in video games, group and board games, cooking, crafts, sports and walks to local parks. For program times and costs, call 356-6156.
