SCVAL's best are North all-stars

By Dick Sparrer

Who was the best running back in the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League last fall?

Cupertino fans knew it was David Jackson. For those folks at Monta Vista, there was no question--it was Chad Purcell. And over at Homestead, they were convinced it was Tony Elam.

Jeff Lamson doesn't really care. Because the Homestead football coach is the head coach for the North squad in the upcoming Charlie Wedemeyer All-Star Football Game, and he's just happy to have all three local stars together in the same backfield.

The three represent quite a piece of SCVAL real estate. All three flirted with the 1,000-yard mark a year ago, Jackson in the El Camino Division and Purcell and Elam in the De Anza Division. The trio will be together this week when the Almaden Rotary sponsors the 23rd annual Wedemeyer All-Star Game on July 23 with an 7:30 p.m. kick-off at San Jose State University's Spartan Stadium.

Jackson, Purcell and Elam had up an impressive list of SCVAL stars set to play in what is called the "Best Game in Town."

Josh Rogers of Los Gatos and Adam Perez of Milpitas, rival quarterbacks last season, will share the offensive load on Wednesday night.

They'll be throwing to SCVAL superstar wide receivers Jason White and Ruben Ortiz of Milpitas and talented tight ends Adam Peters of Monta Vista and Jeremy Malander of Los Gatos. Dan Ljepava of Leigh is another top wide receiver for the North, and Brandon Morgan of Prospect will be a force at tight end.

Centers Art Alegria of Fremont and Mark Glennon of Homestead will be joined on the offensive line by SCVAL stars Carlos Lanuza of Los Gatos and Nathan Wood of Gunn.

Up front defensively, it will be Homestead's Bo Gerth and David Atchison teaming with Ung Ngo of Mountain View and Mike Fukuhara of Palo Alto to lead the North effort.

Linebackers Brennan Carroll of Saratoga, Beau Williams of Gunn, Mike McNeil of Monta Vista, Doug Miller of Los Gatos, Steve Horner of Lynbrook and Milo Lewis of Mountain View are all SCVAL standouts set to play in the game. Mat Meade of Westmont is another top 'backer slated to see action.

Strong safety Andrew Delgado and free safety Ben Amiwero of Homestead, defensive backs Jason Adkins and T.C. Everett Jr. of Wilcox, and free safety David Goni of Saratoga are SCVAL talents in the secondary.

Tickets for the game are priced at $8. Children under 5 will be admitted free with a paying adult.
