Grace Stanley
Grace Navone Stanley, a former Los Gatos resident, died July 5 of congestive heart failure in Eugene, Ore., where she had been residing. She was 84.
Stanley was born March 22, 1917, in Oakland, where she graduated from University High School at the age of 16. She played cello in a musical ensemble and worked at a series of secretarial jobs until she entered UC-Berkeley. She later transferred to UC-Davis, where she met Ed Stanley, a graduate student who would later become her husband.
The couple married in Reno, Nev., in 1941, but their college studies were interrupted by the outbreak of World War II. In 1943, they bought a turkey ranch in Santa Rosa; two years later, they moved to Sonora, where their three children were born between 1946 and 1949.
In 1952, the Stanleys moved to Santa Clara, and then to Los Gatos. Stanley obtained a teaching credential from San Jose State University and became a school teacher, while her husband worked in adult education administration. The couple moved to Mt. Hood, Ore., in 1969.
She was preceded in death by her husband, one brother and one sister. Survivors include daughters Carla Moser of Eugene, Ore., and Sara Baz of Odell, Ore.; son Bill Stanley of Parkdale, Ore.; step-daughters Janice Barnhart of San Mateo and Martha Hassler of Bethesda, Md.; grandchildren Chris, Laura and Terry Stanley; Melanie Moser; Charis Baz Takaro, Bronwyn Baz Waddell and Rose, Alyssa, Zachary and Naomi Baz; step-grandchildren Fred Barnhart, Becky Crowe, Julie Barnhart, Scott Hassler and Sarah Buchanon Wollaston; and great-grandson Ryland Takaro.
