Russian orphans experience Los Gatos

    The Prowler

A friend pointed out that the activities the Prowler writes about are often free of charge. That is true, not only because this canny cat recognizes a good price, but also because some of these events actually raise funds for the associated organizations if a donation is requested in lieu of admission. The Prowler also tries to strike a balance by occasionally encouraging volunteer opportunities, as is the case this week.

The Los Gatos Public Library runs a program called Library Grandparents, in which senior citizens read stories to children Monday through Wednesday afternoons. It's a win-win situation: seniors feel needed and have fun interacting with the younger set, while kids--especially those who may lack grandparents--can learn from and share with a caring older adult. The program can't run without readers, however. To learn about volunteer opportunities, call 408.399.5723.

Also here in Cat Town, Community Hospital of Los Gatos, at 815 Pollard Road, is always looking for friendly volunteers to help staff the gift shop, do clerical work, run errands and assist the nurses and ward clerks. Call 408.378.6131, ext. 4154, to learn more.

Finally, the Greenbelt Alliance, a nonprofit that promotes land conservation and wise urban planning seeks trip leaders for its Greenbelt Outings Program. These folks, who should have prior knowledge of nature and the outdoors, will lead hikes, bike tours or other day trips and educate people about our unique wild areas. The Alliance has many other positions for interns and volunteers; call 415.398.3730 for more info, or visit www.greenbelt.org on the Internet.
