Wedemeyer Classic returns for 26th year
By Dick Sparrer
The 26th annual Silicon Valley Youth Classic Charlie Wedemeyer High School All-Star Football game returns to the Santa Clara Valley this week with the North and South to collide on July 26 at San Jose State University's Spartan Stadium.
Kick-off for the game, sponsored by the Almaden Valley Rotary Club, is set for 7:30 p.m. Tickets are priced at $10 each, and proceeds go to the Rotary charity and scholarship programs. Children under 8 will be admitted free when accompanied by a parent.
The game resumes a tradition that was born in 1974 when future NFL stars Doug Cosbie and Don Schwartz topped a talented field in the first-ever all-star classic.
Cosbie, a tight end from St. Francis, would go on to star at Santa Clara University before becoming an outstanding tight end for the Dallas Cowboys. Cosbie was an All-Pro in Dallas and played for the Cowboys in the NFC championship game.
Schwartz, a defensive back from Mitty, was Cosbie's North teammate in the All-Star game of '74. He went on to play for both the St. Louis Cardinals and New Orleans Saints in the NFL.
Other all-stars who went on to great things after playing in the first "Best Game in Town" included: Millard Hampton of Silver Creek, Olympic gold medalist; Otis Page of Saratoga, a tackle for three victorious Rose Bowl teams at the University of Southern California; Pete Pele of Mitty, lineman for UCLA in its 23-10 Rose Bowl win over Ohio State in 1976; and Steve Bauer of Los Gatos, who went on to the University of Washington where he played for the Huskies in the 1978 Rose Bowl.
Los Gatos was well-represented in the first game.
Not only did Bauer play for the South team, but he was joined by Gatos teammate Gary Lynn and Leigh's Rick Foley.
Lynn, who scored three touchdowns for the South team in that first game, went on to start at tailback at Stanford University.
Foley played both football and baseball at Santa Clara University, but really shined on the pitcher's mound for the Broncos where he earned all-conference honors for two straight seasons. He went on to play professional baseball and was recently named to the Santa Clara University Hall of Fame. Foley is a coach in the Los Gatos Little League.
