West Valley College presents 'West Side Story'

    Museum seeks earthquake memories

At 5:04 p.m. on October 17, the Loma Prieta earthquake will celebrate--if such a word can be applied to a natural disaster--its 10th anniversary. In memory of the 7.1-magnitude temblor and the many ways it affected life in Los Gatos and surrounding areas, the Los Gatos Museum Association is preparing a new exhibit to open in late August at the Forbes Mill Regional History Museum, at 75 Church St.

The exhibit will include objects damaged in the quake, then-and-now photos of quake-damaged buildings and other structures and earthquake preparedness materials. The LGMA hopes to expand the exhibit with residents' personal memories and memorabilia.

"We're looking for people who have a story to tell," says museum director and curator Laura Bajuk. "The memories we have heard and are recording are incredibly moving--the people who went above and beyond to help a neighbor, the real fear, and bravery, that was part of it all."

The Loma Prieta earthquake exhibit is scheduled to run through December, which includes the Oct .17 anniversary. The museum may even hold a reception on that date.

Anyone with earthquake-related stories or objects to share may call Bajuk at the Forbes Mill office at 395-7375, or send an email to lgmuseums@aol.com.
