The Prowler

Just as mighty oaks grow from little acorns, successful nonprofit organizations grow from many years' worth of fundraisers and contributions--no matter how small the monetary amount, it adds up.

With that in mind, the Prowler hopes many people support Los Gatos' own Live Oak Senior Nutrition and Service Center this weekend during its benefit hot-dog sale. On Aug. 1 and 2 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in front of Lunardi's Market on Blossom Hill Road, Live Oak personnel will tempt hungry passersby with a freshly barbecued hot-dog, chips and a drink--all for $1. This food-loving cat might even stop by and enjoy the repast at that price! Kudos to Lunardi's for helping out, and good luck to the Live Oak folks for a good sale.

The Live Oak also welcomes the public to a lunch with entertainment on July 31, beginning at 11:45 a.m. Back by popular demand, violinist Tibor Horvath and pianist Yelena Savchenko perform a wide repertoire of music, including Eastern European, Gypsy, international, classical, popular and show tunes. Suggested contribution for seniors 60 and older is $1.55. Cost for guests is $4. Call 354-0707 for reservations.

There are never reservations needed for the 7:30 p.m. poetry readings on the first Wednesday of every month at Cafe Rouge, located at 42 Elm St. The featured reader on Aug. 5 is Jim Lyle. Afterward, audience members can step up to the microphone and read poetry of their own. Songs and short prose are also welcome. Would-be bards should arrive early, as this cat has noticed that the open-mic sign-up sheet can fill quickly. While you're there, take in the cool art on the walls.
