Mark Dean Veca's 'Harum-Scarum'

    The Prowler

Not only is the Prowler the stereotypically curious cat, but the Prowler is also a creative cat. Any readers who share this duality will want to check out these interesting upcoming events.

All aboard! Model railroad buffs, not to mention their friends and family who wonder what this passion is all about, will have a field day at the 2000 National Train Show, run by the National Model Railroad Association and the Model Railroad Industry Association.

The shindig takes place on Aug. 5 and 6, at the San Jose Convention Center and features model RR displays and layouts, as well as vendors of railroading and other collectibles. Among the locals participating are Los Gatans Howard Lloyd and Jose Picazo. For ticket prices or other info, call 408.277.3900.

Enthusiasts of another hobby--photography--will be in their element during the Aug. 7 meeting of the Los Gatos-Saratoga Camera Club, set for 7:30 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church of Los Gatos, 16575 Shannon Road. Members will show slides and prints and hold a critique. Prospective members and guests are welcome. To learn more about the group, call 408.266.0250, or visit lgscc.home.att.net on the Internet.

Prospectives and guests are also welcome at the Aug. 12 meeting of the Los Gatos Art Association, which begins at 1 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Los Gatos, 19 High School Court. Artist Lian Quan Zhen will demonstrate a watercolor-based technique he calls "color pouring and blending," which he's derived from a Chinese brush painting technique. The LGAA is comprised of nearly 200 artists who work in all mediums.
