    Volleyball Camps

Los Gatos volleyball coaches Joe Ripp and Tom Jack will host camps for pre-high school and high school players this summer. Jack is the boys volleyball coach for the Wildcats, and Ripp coaches the girls team.

    * Los Gatos High and the Vision Volleyball Club will co-host a girls youth volleyball camp this summer for players in grades 5-9.

The camp is slated for Aug. 1-4, 1-3:30 p.m. each day. The cost is $95 per player, and each camper will receive a T-shirt.

Ripp, who will direct the camp, is in his 11th year as a girls volleyball coach and is entering his eighth season as the Gatos head coach. He is also the director of the Vision Volleyball Club and is a teacher at the high school.

For more information, call Ripp at 408.264.7801.

    * Jack will be joined by Olympic gold medalist Pat Powers as the two host a volleyball camp for high school athletes on Aug. 18-20, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. each day, at Los Gatos High.

Powers, the current men's volleyball coach at USC, played nine years on the U.S. National Team, winning Olympic gold and playing in the World Cup and World Championships. He was an All-American at USC, leading the Trojans to an NCAA championship, and spent 10 years on the AVP professional beach tour.

Powers has been coaching volleyball since 1981, and is beginning his fifth season as the head coach at USC. His 2000 team posted a 22-5 record and was ranked No. 3 in the nation.

Jack has led the Wildcats to a 61-4 league record during his five years at Los Gatos. He has been coaching volleyball for 11 years, including the direction of several summer camps.

The cost for three-day high school camp is $150 per player. For more information, call Jack at 408.358.8622.

    Special Olympics

With the summer season drawing to a close, plans are already under way for the Special Olympics fall season.

Volunteers are needed for sports training in soccer, long distance running and power lifting. Coaches are needed for the eight-week season, and no experience is necessary.

A volunteer orientation meeting is set for Aug. 8, 7 p.m., at the Special Olympics office on Chambertin Drive in San Jose. For more information, call 408.267.2734 or check their Web site at www.sonc.org/sccso.
