Los Gatos Weekly-TimesNews BriefsCounty Fair now open The Santa Clara County Fair is open and runs through Aug. 9 at 344 Tully Road in San Jose. Hours are 2-11 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and 11a.m.-11p.m. Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday. This year's fair, in an attempt to bridge the Santa Clara Valley of old and the Silicon Valley of today, has included such events as a Bill Gates look-alike contest and a modem-calling contest, as well as a geeky-glasses day. Entertainment includes Tower of Power and Jefferson Starship. Animal services gets a new name The Humane Society Animal Services Department is changing its name to South Bay Animal Control Services, effective Aug. 1. But animal services by any other name is still just as helpful, officials say, stressing that the change is in name only. The new South Bay Animal Control Services will continue to provide animal control and licensing services for the cities of San Jose, Santa Clara, Milpitas, Campbell, Cupertino, Los Gatos, Monte Sereno and Saratoga. Although the level of services varies from city to city, the agency will still perform such duties as responding to complaints of domestic animals causing nuisances, rescuing sick and injured stray and wild animals, removing dead animals, investigating reports of animal attacks and bites against humans, patrolling for and impounding stray animals and investigating reports of abuse and neglect against animals. Officials say the agency's new name reflects the geographical area it serves and is consistent with the name of its South Bay Animal Licensing Department. For more information, call the agency at 727-6529.
