Los Gatos resident named to board

Emily Herr of Los Gatos was recently elected to be a member of Mortar Board at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota.

Herr, a 1994 graduate of Los Gatos High School, is the daughter of Eric and Rebecca Herr. The economics major learned she had been elected to the board during the school's annual Honors Day Convocation held in late May.

LGHS student at art camp

Los Gatos High School student Gavin Johnson is spending his summer attending Interlochen Arts Camp in Interlochen, Michigan. Johnson, 16, who will be a senior at LGHS this fall, is currently a member of the high school's Jazz Purr Vocal Ensemble and traveled with the group to Carnegie Hall this past winter. He has studied French horn for nine years and is playing principal second horn in the San Jose Symphony Youth Orchestra.

As part of his camp experience in Interlochen, Johnson will major in Shakespearean Theatre and will study both French horn and voice privately. He plans to return to Los Gatos on Aug. 17 to attend both Jazz Purr and San Jose Symphony Youth Orchestra camps.

Kristi Maibaum takes part in medical forum

Kristi Maibaum, recent Los Gatos High School graduate and local resident, recently participated in the National Medical Leadership Forum in Boston. She, along with 350 other students selected from a national pool of talented high school students with an interest in professional medicine, traveled to Boston for 11 days of discovery and mentorship by some of the nation's most respected minds in medical science. The students visited such medical institutions as Harvard Medical School, Brown University School of Medicine, Winchester Hospital, City Lab and Tufts University School of Medicine. Students also studied with and learned from leaders in the field of medicine such as Dr. Denneith Edelin of Boston University School of Medicine and Dr. Susan Briggs of Massachusetts General Hospital.

SCU honors two Los Gatons

Santa Clara University recently honored Gerard M. Mooney and Michael A. Riese during their commencement ceremony last month. Mooney and Riese each received the Richard J. Riordan Award for outstanding community service.

CASA honors LGHS seniors

Angel Cheng, David Friedland and Lauren Goodwin, all 1998 LGHS graduates, each recently received a $500 service award scholarship from Community Against Substance Abuse. Each of the alumni served as student members of CASA's executive board. CASA officials said each also exemplified the ideals for which the group stands.

UC-Santa Barbara honors students

Kristin Favero and Hans Heller of Los Gatos, and Garrett Snyder of Monte Sereno were each recently named to UC-Santa Barbara's dean's honor list for the spring quarter. Favero, a biochemistry-molecular biology major; Heller, an art studio major; and Snyder, who is majoring in ecology and evolution, each had to maintain a GPA of 3.75 while taking 12 units to make the list. The honor is noted on their permanent records.
