The Prowler

A big fan of ice cream, gelato and frozen yogurt, this cat has taken to prowling more frequently down the streets of Los Gatos despite the weather, seeing as a tummy filled with a cold dessert is a great way to beat the heat.

It occurred to the Prowler what a delicious variety of flavors--not to mention styles--of frozen treats exist in Los Gatos. Incidentally, this cat does not endorse any establishment over another; all are equally cool to this feline!

The Prowler sees health-conscious fro-yo fans flocking to Yogurt Delight, TCBY and Hug-A-Berry. The first two have an advantage with the four to eight yummy flavors prepared daily and the fact they belong to franchises, but the latter has its own merit: customized flavor blending.

Along with its namesake berries, the shop stocks many fresh fruit toppings, candies, nuts and other items that are mixed with yogurt in a loud contraption to create colorful, unique flavor combos.

When the Prowler has a hankering for something rich and fattening, Dolce Spazio is the remedy. The freshly made gelato--Italian ice cream with more cream, less air and no ice--may be a bit on the gooey side, but its taste is well worth the mess.

Then there's good old-fashioned ice cream, of which Los Gatos suffers no lack. No longer limited to 31 flavors, Baskin Robbins also whips up some mighty wild frozen concoctions using ice cream, sherbet and juice. Swenson's offers frighteningly fancy sundaes like "The Earthquake" and "The Gold Rush." And Thrifty, still the best dime-store ice cream in town, has a nice flavor variety and those distinctive cylindrical ice-cream scoops.
