Francis Filer
Former Los Gatan Francis "Frank" Filer died of congestive heart failure July 5 in Carmichael, where he had been residing. He was 88.
Filer was born Jan. 21, 1913, on a farm in Pipestone, Minn. He and his family moved to California while he was still a teenager.
In 1938, Filer met his wife-to-be, Mildred. They married later that same year, following a whirlwind courtship. The couple first lived in San Francisco, before settling in Los Gatos in 1940. After World War II, Filer became a successful painting contractor. He was active in the Los Gatos Rotary Club, First Presbyterian Church of Los Gatos and Boy Scouts of America, and the recipient of the Rotary Club's Paul Harris Fellow Award. In 1985, he was named Los Gatos Citizen of the Year.
In 1992, Filer and his wife moved to Eskaton Village in Carmichael, where they were the first residents to move in. In 1998, they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary, shortly before Mildred died in December of that same year.
In his spare time, Filer enjoyed fishing, taking trips with his family, working in his garden and painting--pictures, rather than houses.
Survivors include daughter Nancy; son Harry; grandchildren Brian, Mark and Christy; sister Alice; and brothers Eddie and Harley.
Memorial services have been held. Donations may be made to the Boys Scouts of America or to a charity of choice.
