Pony all-stars win section title, qualify for regionals

    By Dick Sparrer

The Los Gatos Pony League all-stars made short work of the field in the Pony Section tournament played in late July at Campbell's John D. Morgan Park.

Los Gatos won three straight games to claim the championship in the seven-team tournament, beating host Campbell twice and Saratoga in a quick five-inning game.

By winning the sectional crown, Los Gatos advances to the eight-team regional tournament currently being played at Lou Vierra Field in Santa Clara. The tourney runs through Aug. 8.

Los Gatos clinched the section title with a 5-1 win over Campbell in the championship game.

Derek Thomas went the distance on the hill to get the win, striking out five along the way.

Jeremy Bays ripped four doubles to lead a 13-hit assault for the local all-stars. Kenny Rodrigues, Mike Brienzo and Thomas added two hits each and Nat Henry doubled.

Jadd Correia and Andy Holloway each singled and walked in the win and Brian Wendt knocked in two runs.

Los Gatos had opened the tournament with an 8-1 win over Campbell. Thomas struck out six in five innings on the hill and Correia fanned a pair in two innings of relief.

Holloway was the big slugger for Gatos with a grand slam, a three-run homer and a single to drive in seven of the club's eight runs.

Brienzo, Thomas and Andrew Silva added singles and Bays drove in the only other Gatos run on a fielder's choice.

Los Gatos pounded Saratoga 16-5 in five innings in the semifinals. Holloway went the five innings to get the mound win, striking out eight.

Correia had four hits, including a triple, and Wendt ripped a home run for Los Gatos.

Rodrigues and Kyle Jensen each doubled twice in the win, and Holloway, Bays and Brienzo each singled and doubled. Silva singled and walked for Gatos.
