'Spiritual' one presented a one-sided case

The opinion piece by Sandy Sims ("Philosophies Collide on Family Vacation") in the Aug. 2 issue of the Los Gatos Weekly-Times is quite disturbing. I am very familiar with the person she claims lacks "spirituality" because he did not take a four- hour side trip while driving 1,600 miles in a 10-day period. The person she so flippantly described in her opinionated article is in fact a kind, considerate, compassionate and sensitive person who has and continues to tolerate many of Ms. Sims' personal idiosyncrasies.

She forgot to mention in her nearly slanderous piece, that it was her erstwhile traveling companion who had originally suggested the driving vacation in the first place. She also forgot to mention that she wanted to stop by lakes overnight and that did happen, twice.

Clearly she forgot to report that the side trip she mentioned she would like to take was prefaced with the comment, "It is your decision--I got to make the decision to take the 'Scenic Six Route.' I mean it, it is really up to you."

Within 10 minutes of not taking the turnoff for the four-hour side trip, the conversation became, as it has been described, "frosty." I understand the next day or so in the car the mood was quite somber and "perfunctory." It was only after visiting the Cedar Point resort area and seeing the tallest roller coaster in the world (310 feet) and stopping at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (where an excellent parking place was easily found, I am told), was the driver able to convince the spiritually enlightened Ms. Sims, that it had been a good vacation.

Although the piece was on the opinion page, it still needs to be factually correct. Besides, see if I buy her a present for our anniversary next year.

Longs is doing an end run around the neighbors

I was appalled to read your front-page article "Rinconada Neighbors Now Welcome Longs," in the Aug. 2 issue of the Los Gatos Weekly-Times. Nothing could be further from the truth. As stated in the article more than 1,000 people opposed this project. Now through some sort of scam on behalf of the property owners, a secret petition allegedly containing 150 signatures supports it? What kind of nonsense is this?

I do not know of anyone who supports the addition of another chain drugstore in our neighborhood. It is clearly not needed and not wanted.

It is apparent the developer had this sort of end run in mind for some time because no attempt had ever been made to rent the space vacated by Rinconada Pharmacy. It was simply left vacant, while they waited to see if they could slip it through, unnoticed by all of those who are still opposed.

I hope that Los Gatos Planning Commission is not duped by this and really listens to the voice of the community, which commissioners are supposed to represent. If new local input is wanted, let the local residents know and I am sure the same views will be expressed as before.

GOP convention makes impression on Californian

The title to my letter to all of you fine editors is "Wow." The reason being, I just returned home to my wonderful State of California from the GOP National Convention.

This was my first live attendance but I have seen every one on television ever since I can remember. Many deep emotions were left with me. The first being the platform and committment of "Inclusion." This is a new Republican party that wants to recruit new faces and new ideas. The problem is that many minorities only think that the Democratic party is for them.

As Janet Jackson would say,"What have they done for you lately?" Lately being the last eight years. If you have invested in the stock market, then you have much to be thankful for.

I do not think it is fair or right to pass the credit on to Bill Clinton, but rather to Bill Gates, Alan Greenspan and many other entrepreneurs who were not afraid to take risks and follow their dreams. Their risks were calculated risks, not just plain stupidity. They had dreams, the intelligence, and most importantly, the will to win--just like George W. Bush.

The Latino people will and are getting this message to all of the Latinos of this great state of California and it will only intesify as the race gets closer.

Thank you George W., for being such an easy product to sell and thank you so much for being such a great man and a great leader. The American people want this in a President and will get it--very, very soon. I will soon be able to tell my three young sons that the President is someone they can be proud of and emulates what a person and leader should be.

You must now excuse me, I had too much iced tea.

    Correction

In our cover story about downtown businesses feeling the pinch of increasing rents, we mistakenly reported that the rent at Ford Cleaners had increased. What we should have said was that Acacia Kim, daughter of owners Chong and Kyung Kim, said that when their lease is up in two years they are afraid that, like their neighbors, their rent will increase by at least double.
