Los Gatos Weekly-TimesThe ProwlerVintners, cops, golfers, and a senior social activist--where can you find such a mix of people? In Los Gatos! Always on the prowl for interesting events, this cat found many coming up. On Aug. 14 at 2 p.m., the Los Gatos Meadows hosts a presentation by Georgia Travis, a former social worker, author and professor who, among other things, is an advocate for homeless families. She lives at the Meadows now, but her 45 years in social work exposed her to many places and faces. There's limited seating, so give the Meadows a call at 354-0211 for more info. Another retirement community, The Terraces of Los Gatos, hosts a wine-tasting afternoon on Aug. 22 with potent potables from local wineries like Mirassou, David Bruce, Burrell School, Bear Creek and Byington. Mr. Bruce himself will demonstrate the basics of wine tasting, while a chamber music group lends ambiance to the event. For those who like to eat as well as drink, there will be antipasto snacks like cheese, bread and fruit. Five bucks gains admission and a free wine glass. Call 356-1006, ext. 157, for reservations. Some police officers may favor doughnut shops, but on Aug. 18 the Prowler expects at least some of Los Gatos' cops will be at La Rinconada Country Club, venue for the third annual Summer Classic Golf Tournament. A benefit for the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program, the tourney begins with a (perhaps ironic?) shotgun start at high noon. Anyone with $135 can play; the fee includes tee prizes, a barbecue lunch, contests, a golf cart and dinner. Of the three LGPD officers named Randy, two are involved with this event. Page Randy Bishop at 237-8317 or Randy Villata at 920-1175 for information.
