Sophia Loren follows son to Montalvo

    By Mary Ann Cook

SOPHIA AT MONTALVO: Sophia Loren came to Saratoga a couple of weeks ago, and the audience broke into a spontaneous round of applause--even though she wasn't the performer. Turns out the fabled star is a staunch supporter of her son, Carlo Ponti Jr., and he was conducting the Russian National Symphony in a program at Montalvo.

Sophia was the last to be seated and appreciative applause greeted her entrance. A private dinner was given beforehand with the sponsors of the program, and a reception was held afterward at the Villa. "She's beyond gorgeous," says one attendee.

INTERNATIONAL TRAVELERS: Seven Los Gatans attended the International Convention of Kiwanis in Taipei, Taiwan, in July--Terry Martin and son B.J., Rosalie and Ernie Patterson, Anita and Don Wolf and Marilynn West. The men (except for B.J.) are all past presidents of the Los Gatos Kiwanis.

West is president elect of the Campbell Kiwanis. At the convention the group celebrated the completion of the Iodine Deficiency Project, a Kiwanis crusade designed to wipe out the leading cause of mental retardation in children. Some $75 million has been raised by Kiwanis International.

The group also toured mainland China, with a week-long cruise through the Three Gorges on the Yangtze River and the Dannin River. Highlights of the trip included a visit to Beijing and the climb up the Great Wall. The modernization of Taiwan and mainland China impressed the visitors.

SAVING AN EYE: Some pro bono surgery by Los Gatos eye surgeon Martin Fishman saved the eye of a teenager from Mexico. He's Jamie Ortega, 16, of Puerto Vallarta, and he's now recouping in Santa Cruz. Mexican doctors had told him he would lose the eye because infection was setting in.

He had stabbed his eye with a hypodermic needle. Alan Sims of Santa Cruz heard of his plight through family friends and sprang into action: getting Ortega here and collecting donations from others for his expenses in the U.S.

Assisting Fishman in the operation was anesthesiologist Paul Kennedy. The operation was performed at Community Hospital of Los Gatos.

HIGH TECH FOR JR. TRAVELERS: Youngsters with the travel bug can now be tracked via Internet. Some 33 Fisher School students traveled to France recently, and their activities were recorded by digital camera and uploaded to the web. French teacher Jane Herberich led the group. Parents could check them out at Fishertrips.org.

The technicians who put this together are D. J. La Forge, the tech services supervisor for LG Union School District, and his assistant, Trevor Leon, with support from Steve Wozniak. Trevor, 12, is the son of Suzanne and John Leon.

Longtime Los Gatos beauty shop owner John Leon now works at Scandalous Hair Design and Body Shop with David NyBlom. D.J. La Forge is the son of Sue La Forge, former Times-Observer editor and LG Chamber of Commerce manager.

AT THE INN: Los Gatos Coffee Roasting regular Ann Hoehmann is currently living at The Inn at Willow Glen, 1185 Pedro. A fixture for many years at the coffee company, she would enjoy hearing from coffee cup pals. The inn's number is 408.275.9040.

SUPER WALKER: Cindy Ranii, superintendent of the Los Gatos-Saratoga Joint Union High School District, walked the Avon breast cancer marathon from San Jose to San Francisco one recent weekend, joining 3,300 others who were walking to raise awareness of the disease and money to combat it.

She had trained for the event since February, increasing her mileage every weekend until she was between 15 and 20 miles, and working out at a health club during the week. This was her second Avon venture, and she walks in honor of breast cancer survivors--many colleagues and friends.

Kit Hall, who works in the LGHS attendance office, walked the marathon for the first time. The most impressive part of the adventure for her was being thanked by the wheelchair-bound cancer survivor who personally shook hands with every walker gathered at the Presidio for the finale.

GENETICS RESEARCH: Anna Arnaudo is doing microbiology research in genetics at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania this summer, having won a Marshall Fellowship that funds this research. She also won a Shippen Award for biology, given to the top three students at the college.

She will be a senior this fall and is the daughter of Rose and Donald Arnaudo of Monte Sereno.

NEW OFFICERS: New officers for the local League of Women Voters are: Marj Bunyard, president; Margaret Bard, VP program; Sue Boyd, VP membership; Helga Ruby, administration; Barbara Mendenhall, secretary; and Dale Hill, treasurer.

Directors are: Nancy Hobbs, Patty Weber, Theresa Spinler, Marilyn Bueltman, Mandy Smith, Barbara Hawks, Barbara Lea, Karlina Ott and Doris Boyd. Off-board directors: Marlene Duffin and Mary-Lyle Rempel.
