The Prowler
Last week, the Prowler intercepted an interesting letter addressed to the powers that be at the Los Gatos Weekly-Times. The sender, a Ms. Marty Rauch of Los Angeles, says she is a writer who fancies felines as the topic of many of her writings. The Prowler likes this person already!
Rauch goes on to say that the name of our town has long held an interest for her, and now she'd like to know more about Los Gatos. She asks how and why the town got its name, a chronology of local history, whether there are any legends about the town's namesake wildcats, and if there are any societies to provide her with additional info.
Sounds like a job for local historian Bill Wulf, members of the Los Gatos History Club or Museum Association, or perhaps our own columnist, John Baggerly! The Prowler will check with these folks, but one thing this cat can proffer right away is the original name of our beloved town: La Rinconada de los Gatos--the Little Corner of the Cats!
"I'd like to do an article on this topic for fellow cat lovers. Credit, of course, would be given," Rauch writes. If anyone would like to get in touch with her, please drop the Prowler a line in care of this newspaper.
Now that this cat is almost out of room, there's just enough space to mention the Diversity Celebration being thrown Aug. 25 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Southwest YMCA, our Saratoga neighbor at 13500 Quito Road. The free event includes authentic cooking from various countries, cultural and historical storytellers, Native American arts and crafts demonstrations and a Third World country display. Those attending are welcome to don international dress. Call 408.370.1877.
