New vice chancellor comes to West Valley
At its July 20 meeting, the West Valley-Mission Community College District Board of Trustees named Steven M. Kinsella vice chancellor of administrative services. He replaces Kirk Murray, who is retiring. Kinsella is now responsible for overseeing facilities, finance, human resources, campus police, purchasing, instructional services and a $60 million budget.
Kinsella, who holds a master's of business administration degree and the rank of major in the U.S. Marine Corps, comes to the WVMCCD Board from a position as vice president for administrative services with the Monterey Peninsula Community College District. He is also a certified public accountant and an internal auditor who began his career in the Marines as an auditor. He later served as a senior auditor with the National Broadcasting Company, Inc.
Home builder gets new vice president
The Conrado Company, a luxury custom home builder, has appointed Debra Thackray to the position of vice president. While continuing to oversee marketing and business development for the company, Thackray will also take on expanded account management responsibilities for The Conrado Company, for whom she has worked for 14 years. The company is based in Saratoga and has built more than 40 custom homes in Los Gatos, Monte Sereno, Saratoga, Los Altos Hills, Palo Alto, Atherton and Portola Valley.
Bar association names committee
The West Valley Bar Associations has named its executive committee to serve for the 2000-2001 term. The officers are Marcia O. Kaplan, president; Rebecca S. King, treasurer; and Michelle Fogliani, secretary. Kaplan practices health law in Saratoga with the firm Kaplan and Kaplan. King has a solo estate planning practice in Campbell; Fogliani is an associate in the office of Adelson, Hess and Kelly, also in Campbell.
The West Valley Bar Association consists of active and retired judges and attorneys who live or work in Saratoga, Los Gatos, Monte Sereno or Campbell. It holds quarterly luncheon meetings with guest speakers on a variety of topics. For more information about the group, call 408.867.3355.
Internet startup grows in Los Gatos
In business for less than a year, DSL Designs Inc., which has its headquarters on Lark Avenue in Los Gatos, has grown to claim about 1,000 subscribers using its 14-day guaranteed installation services and its digital subscriber lines, which provide extremely fast broadband Internet access.
DSL Design Inc's founders created the company because they saw the need for "painless" implementation of DSL technology, including the hardware, software and knowledge involved.
The company is focusing its efforts on two geographical areas: the Bay Area and the state of Nevada.
Local residents join Health Trust
The Health Trust, a nonprofit public charity concerned with improving the health and wellness of residents of the greater Santa Clara Valley, has recruited two new members to serve on its board of trustees: Edward M. Alvarez of Los Gatos and Lucy Lofrumento of the Santa Cruz Mountains.
Alvarez is an attorney, certified public accountant and principal of Alvarez Advisory Services. He is a member of the Santa Clara University board of trustees, the Role Model Foundation board of directors and the National Hispanic University board of trustees. Lofrumento is an attorney who recently joined the Silicon Valley Law Group, a business and technology firm.
Among the Health Trust's programs are school-based health centers, Meals-on-Wheels, Healthy Connections AIDS Services, Planetree Health Resource Center and the Community Wellness Program. It gives grants to local hospitals and community organizations and leads strategic initiatives that focus on health needs.
Los Gatos real estate agents meet politicos
Jeff Barnett of Alain Pinel Realtors and Danny and Heather Mander of Fine Homes & Estates traveled to Washington, D.C., in early June to meet with key Congressional leaders as part of the 2000 National Association of Realtors Mid-Year Directors Meetings and Hill Visits.
As members of a group of representatives from the Silicon Valley Association of Realtors, Barnett and the Manders met with Congresswoman Anna Eshoo, as well as personnel from Rep. Tom Campbell's office. They discussed important issues affecting local homeowners and the real-estate industry.

Rita Boren, a real estate broker with Fred Sands Landmark Properties, has joined the West Valley-Mission Community College District Advancement Board. The Advancement Foundation is the fundraising arm of the District, which has two colleges: West Valley in Saratoga and Mission in Santa Clara.
Boren, who has lived in the Los Gatos/Saratoga area since 1965, is a former West Valley student who graduated at the top of her class. She later graduated Phi Kappa Phi from San Jose State University with a bachelor's degree in business. She is a member of the Los Gatos Rotary Club and the San Jose Symphony Conductor's Circle. She has volunteered time on the Via Rehabilitation Board and as a table captain for the annual YWCA Professional Women's Luncheon.
