The Prowler
Don't look now, but summer will soon be drawing to a close: school starts in a week or two, and autumn commences within a month. Perhaps that's why the Prowler always finds lots to write about in August--if the season has to end, it might as well be packed with as much stuff as possible beforehand. Take your pick!
Vaudeville may be gone, but it'll never be forgotten. One person who'll see to that is Tony Castle, an actor experienced in live theater, comedy and film. On Aug. 18, he'll perform his own spin on a comedic vaudeville show at 4 p.m. at Borders Books, Music & Cafe in Old Town. Although it's geared toward seniors, everyone is welcome.
On Aug. 22, the Santa Clara Valley Gem & Mineral Society hosts Colleen McGann for a presentation titled "Cinnabar Minerals, the Ore of Mercury" at Belwood Recreation Center, 100 Belwood Gateway in Los Gatos. The program also includes a gem display, an I.D. session on rock specimens and a display of lapidary work by society members. Admission is free. Call 408.265.1422 for info.
For folks with some knowledge of computers but not anywhere close to being geeks, the Los Gatos-Saratoga Department of Community Education and Recreation offers its popular Intro to Windows 95/98, a hands-on workshop on Aug. 24, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Reservations are a must. Call 408.354.8700, ext. 221.
Finally, don't miss the annual Town-Wide Sidewalk Sale, set for Aug. 26 and 27, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. This event, organized by the Town of Los Gatos Chamber of Commerce, is a shopper's delight! Participating merchants bring their wares to the sidewalks.
