Local teenagers earn spots in camp
This summer, while many students headed for sports camp, computer camp, cheerleading camp or just plain camping, four Los Gatos High School students attended leadership camp at St. Mary's College in Moraga: Erin Dury of Monte Sereno and Lauren Manley, Matt Masoni and Brian Star, all of Los Gatos
The camp was run by the nonprofit National Teen Leadership Program, which is based in Sacramento.
There are also hands-on workshops and interview sessions to prepare teenagers for future challenges. Additionally, some teens earn cash awards. To participate in leadership camp, teenagers must do well academically and be involved in extracurricular activities and in their community.
Among the activities that qualified Dury to attend the camp include founding the LGHS Tolerance Club, performing in the Wildcat Marching Band, volunteering with young people and senior citizens, and babysitting.
Manley's activities include being a reporter; photographer and editor of LGHS's newspaper El Gato; serving on the board of A Place for Teens and as an officer on the LGHS Student Council; being a youth group leader for her church; and achieving a black belt in tae kwon do.
The activities that earned Masoni his place at camp include earning high honors in algebra and geometry and special recognition in science; earning the high grades necessary to be a Principal's Scholar; playing on the LGHS junior varsity football and wrestling teams; and being a core member of the youth group at St. Mary's Church.
Star qualified through his involvement as a LGHS peer counselor; his position on the yearbook; and his membership in volleyball and track and field.
