Lexington open to swimmers

The second annual Catfish Swim, part of the Red Bull Bay Area Open Water Swim Series, takes place Aug. 30 at Lexington Reservoir in Los Gatos. This is the only day of the year that Lexington is open to swimmers.

Race-day registration begins at 7:30 a.m. There are two events available to swimmers: a 1.2-mile swim beginning at 9 a.m., or a 2.4-mile relay beginning at 9:20 a.m. Both courses consist of counterclockwise swims around the reservoir, with large neon buoys marking every 200 yards. Lifeguards and roving boats will also be present on the land and water, respectively, to ensure participants' safety.

The 2.4-mile relay involves two-person teams, in which each member swims 1.2 miles and then tags his or her partner. There are separate divisions for wetsuit swimmers, non-wetsuit swimmers, males, females and coed teams. Registration at least one week before race day is $25 per person or $30 per team. Race-day registration is $35 per person or $40 per team. The cost includes a swim cap, a T-shirt, a catered meal following the race, awards, computerized timing and a complete set of race results. Participants and spectators can also try out a rock-climbing wall, enjoy music and entertainment and view an inverted free-fall skydiving demonstration.

Proceeds from the event benefit the San Jose Search and Rescue and the Andrew Hill High School Junior Army ROTC program.

No parking is allowed at Lexington Reservoir. Participants and spectators may park on the campus of Los Gatos High School and ride a free shuttle to the reservoir. For more information, call 866-8848 or register online at www.japroductions.com/swims.html.
