St. Mary's youth make pilgrimage to France, Italy

PILGRIMS IN PARIS: Seven St. Mary's students are in Paris for the World Youth Day Celebration. They'll visit Rome, Florence and Assisi as well as Paris, and spend 19 days as pilgrims visiting the roots of their faith--St. Peter's, the Sistine Chapel and St. Francis' birthplace. They'll hike several miles to Longchamps, the Paris racetrack, then hold a Saturday night vigil in sleeping bags there, along with about a half million or more other young people from throughout the world. Singular honor: Shannon Cozzo, a member of the St. Mary's contingent, is one of only six chosen from the U.S. to sing to the assembled. Youth Minister Gail Campanella is hoping Pope John Paul II will be on stage while the musical group is performing, so Shannon can get a rare close viewing. And talk about logistical problems: The entire group--400 youths from Northern California alone--will spend four days in French homes. Chaperones from St. Mary's in attendance are Nora Wallace and Mary Calderon, in addition to Campanella.

CROWNED AGAIN: Pamela Condit Kennedy has been named Ms. California Mom 1997-98 and will represent the state in the Ms. America Mom Pageant in 1998. Kennedy's paramount issues are domestic abuse and breast cancer. As a breast cancer survivor, she is especially concerned about early detection of the disease. An inspirational speaker, a volunteer for the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association, she has also written a book about nurturing a successful marriage, Where Have All the Lovers Gone. Her husband, Richard, is the pastor of Los Gatos Christian Church. Offspring are April, Amy and Aaron, plus granddaughter Chelsea. Pamela was also Mrs. Los Gatos 1996-97

MAKEUP MAVEN: Christine Collins does hair and makeup at The Competition on Royce Street (colorings and men's cuts her specialties) and does hair and makeup for film, TV and commercials. The latter work is for her dad's company, Starlite Studios in San Jose. She's working on Frog and Wombat, being filmed in Santa Cruz, and before that was part of the crew of Still Waters Burn, filmed entirely in San Jose. Christine can juggle the two roles by double-booking customers on days she's not filming. Working with her father, Marty Collins, gives her a strong feeling for family and pride in the work he does. Independent films, like the ones her father directs, rely on film festivals to get them known, marketed and into theaters. Still Waters Burn is a contemporary love story about an over-the-hill basketball player.

JIFFY MARKET ON SCREEN: Yes, that was a filming crew at Jiffy Market on Los Gatos Boulevard a Saturday morning or two ago. The picture is called Lloyd; it's due out in theaters come March; and it's a Tom Arnold film, but Tom wasn't at this filming. Seems a 7-Eleven store in Sunnyvale turned the crew down, but a Coke salesman suggested they talk to Jiffy's Dave Dellavecchia, and the deed was done. Dave took over operation of the store from his parents, Ray and Ruth, early this year. Ray and Ruth have been traveling, instead of trading, these days.

COURTSIDE: A benefit for the Junior Tennis Council netted approximately $60,000, reports Courtside's tennis director Gordon Collins. The council helps kids who wouldn't otherwise be able to learn to play the game. Sixty amateurs and 60 pros teamed up for the two-day tourney, the amateurs paying $400 for the privilege. Winners in women's doubles were Daisy Anzoatequi of Los Gatos and Ewalani McCalla, a member of the pro satellite tour who trained at Brookside in Saratoga. In men's doubles, victors were Dave Hilton of San Jose and Tye Ferdinandsen, a Fresno pro. Mixed doubles: Bert Okuda of Campbell and Rosie Vareis of Alameda. Sponsors: Fila sportswear and Nellcor/Puritan/Bennett, a company that makes surgical equipment. They paid half the fees for physicians entered, of which there were seven. Hobee's of Cupertino supplied meals for 200; E. M. Fox, distributor for Calistoga, donated the water.

MEMOIR WRITING: Villa Montalvo's Literary Arts Committee will offer a workshop in autobiography/memoir writing Sept. 18-Oct. 23. The six-week workshop, taught by Mary Jane Moffatt, will meet Thursdays from 1 to 3:30 p.m. and is open to both beginning and experienced writers. Cost is $150, $140 for Montalvo members. Moffatt is the author of The Times of Our Lives: A Guide to Writing Autobiography and Memoir, as well as three other books. To register call Helen Mackinlay at 741-1908.

ART TILES FOR SHELTER: At Petro-glyph at 32 N. Santa Cruz Ave., you can paint a tile for $5 and help support the homeless. The tiles will form a display wall at the entrance to the county's new shelter in San Jose. Proceeds from the paintings go to the Emergency Housing Consortium, says Randi Kinman, Petroglyph manager. Petroglyph does the glazing and firing and the campaign runs through August.
