Los Gatos boasts its own Opera House, but it's been many years since anyone went there to hear an actual opera. These days, Los Gatans who love opera have to go to San Jose or San Francisco to hear a performance, but there will be plenty for opera fans to enjoy in Los Gatos this year.
The San Jose Opera Guild launches the 1996 fall opera season with its annual pre-season gala dinner Sept. 5 at 7 p.m. at La Rinconada Country Club.
The event features opera singers from Opera San José's resident artist program who will entertain with selected arias previewing their fall performances.
The Opera Guild, in anticipation of the San Francisco opera season, also will present its fall opera lecture series at the Los Gatos History Club, 123 Los Gatos Blvd., beginning Sept. 3 at 11:30 a.m. with a lecture and discussion on Borodin's opera Prince Igor by Richard Taruskin, a professor of music at UC-Berkeley and a respected authority on Russian opera. The production opens in San Francisco Sept. 6. Lunch will not be served at this first lecture, but will be served at later lectures.
Cost of the Opera Guild pre-season dinner is $37.50 per person. For further information and reservations, call 265-7963 or 269-3502.
Cost of the lecture series for non guild members is $7. For information or reservations, call 741-1331 or 354-7525.
