Alcohol cited as potential cause of recent crash

On Aug. 11, at 11:30 p.m., 28-year-old Joel Piber was following a friend on his Harley-Davidson motorcycle in the left lane on southbound Bascom Avenue, just south of Curtner Avenue. Piber, who is from Los Gatos, hit the center divider and died of head injuries from striking his head on concrete, even though he was wearing a helmet. According to San Jose Police officer Rubens Dalaison, the friend said that they had been drinking, and witness statements indicate that there were signs that the accident had been alcohol-related. Police are still investigating the case.

Piber is the second Los Gatan to die from a motorcycle accident in two months. Donald Hunter, 44, died on June 24 on Highway 17 when he lost control of his vehicle.

County fair moved back to summer

On Aug. 14, the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors decided to move the County Fair back to the late summer, its traditional date until two years ago. In the years 2000 and 2001 the fair was held in May in order to take advantage of the weather and increase attendance. What resulted, however, was a drop in attendance attributable to schools still being in session.

The county will hold the fair from July 26 to Aug. 4 next year.

    Drive-through laundry gets town approval

Peninou French Laundry and Cleaners, a business on Los Gatos-Saratoga Road, received town approval to build a delivery and drive-through laundry service. Peninou had originally been granted permission by various town committees on July 20, but neighbor Mark J. Petersen appealed the approval to the Los Gatos Planning Commission on Aug. 8.

Petersen and other neighbors had cited traffic concerns as a basis for denial. Planning commissioners, however, approved the project and town staff pointed out that traffic calming measures were planned for streets in the vicinity.
