The Prowler
Remember last week when the Prowler commented on the plenitude of things to write about as summer draws to a close? Well, here's a bit more this cat came across.
First is a series of lip-reading classes, sponsored by Saratoga's West Valley College, held at the Addison-Penzak Jewish Community Center, 14855 Oka Road in Los Gatos. Beginning, intermediate and advanced classes are available and meet weekly. It's taught by Marcia Farris, an audiologist and WVC instructor. Whether you're hard-of-hearing or not, lip-reading can be a useful skill--take it from this curious cat! Call Farris at 408.730.8860 to sign up.
Most kids' worst back-to-school fears are whether they'll be up on the latest fashions or if they'll have friends in their classes. In some parts of the county, however, there are kids who don't even have enough supplies to do homework. To help, the Salvation Army has kicked off its annual back-to-school supply drive, with a goal of providing some 1,400 kids with binders, pens, pencils, paper and other needful things. To donate money or supplies, call 408.282.1165 ext. 218.
The Prowler's calendar has this Sunday marked as the opening of the latest exhibit at Forbes Mill Museum of Regional History, 75 Church St. The exhibit, which runs through Nov. 26, is titled simply Forbes Mill. Curated by Los Gatan Pat Dunning, who happens to be an archaeologist, it surveys the history of the stone building beside Los Gatos Creek from its construction to the end of its grist mill days in 1887. There are even artifacts uncovered from two archaeologist digs at the site. Museum hours are noon to 4 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday.
