LGUSD students score well
above the average in STAR
By Jason Baker
A report of results from the spring 1999 California Standardized Testing and Reporting program showed Los Gatos Union School District students continued to improve and scored well above average.
Final calculations from the 1999 STAR test showed a range of 62 percent to 89 percent of all students tested at or above the 50th percentile compared to scores from students nationwide. In 1998, the range of students scoring at or above the 50th percentile was 47 to 94 percent.
The national percentile rank indicates the relative standing of a student in comparison with other students in the same grade who took the test at a comparable time. Percentile ranks ranged from a low of one to a high of 99, with 50 denoting average performance for that grade. Changes of less than 5 percent to 7 percent in either direction are usually not considered significant.
Every spring, LGUSD students in second through eighth grade are administered the test, which covers reading, mathematics, language, spelling, science and social science. The STAR test is the state's first achievement test to compare how well students in California perform against other students in the country.
"As an administrator, I'm never satisfied with the test scores," said superintendent Mary Ann Park. "I always want them to be better. But these are very good scores."
Park said district officials would further analyze the scores during the next few weeks to identify any areas that need specific improvement. Administrators then will use the information to address those areas by implementing specific strategies and programs throughout the district.
