Pavicich family keeps those donations coming

    By Mary Ann Cook

GOLF TOURNEY: Winners of the Pavicich-sponsored golf tournament held this summer were the clients at Live Oak Day Care Center. Half of the $45,000 raised went to that service for seniors. The other half went to the nutrition center, also housed in the Methodist Church building.

Live Oak Day Care is a service provided to frail and dependent seniors. Paul Pavicich and Andy Pavicich III started the golf tournament five years ago to honor their beloved grandparents and so designated the two Live Oak services the recipients of the fundraiser.

Thus far some $100,000 has been raised over the past five years from the tourney, reports Leta Friedlander, executive director of the day care centers. On the day the check is presented to the centers, the entire Pavicich clan comes out in force to play cards and games with the seniors at the facility.

The Pavicichs own two restaurants--Los Gatos Brewing Company in Los Gatos (where else?) and A. P. Stump's in San Jose.

ANIMATOR EXTRAORDINAIRE: Mike Murphy is a local product who was the animator for the giant in The Iron Giant, a Warner Brothers film released recently. "I was a proud mom to see his name on the big screen," says his mother, Kathy Murphy.

Mike Murphy has wanted to be an animator since age 4 and has certainly fulfilled that early ambition. The year he was 4 he was on the cover of the Times -Observer for a valentine he had made. As a high school senior, he was accepted into the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, thanks to the portfolio he put together.

He worked for Disney after graduating from the Institute and before accepting the Warner Bros. job. The Iron Giant is his first film. Kathy Murphy taught in Los Gatos schools for 26 years.

WHEELIE WEDDING: Both the bride and groom wore wheelchairs at a recent wedding in Los Gatos. Elaine Kandler and Thomas Hawley had met at a support group for the physically handicapped. Both drive specially equipped cars and he had offered to help direct her home.

But he inadvertently lost her en route. When he called up later to apologize, the apology transmorphed into an invitation. They started dating and thus found their way to the altar. The ceremony and reception were held at a garden luncheon at the Los Gatos home of Edie and Chuck Marshall. Chuck is the bride's brother.

Also present was the bride's 97-year-old mother, Avanell Marshall, also in a wheelchair. Music was furnished by guitarist Steve Barczak, whom all four (the Marshalls and bride and groom) had heard play at the Oak Meadows Nursing Home while visiting Avanell, who lives there

CINEMATOGRAPHER: Dickory Dock is a black and white film, evocative of the 1940s and filmed by Los Gatan Cary Cremidas. It won the Best Cinematography Award at the San Jose Joey awards (for independents) and was nominated for Best Short Film and shown at the Hollywood Film Festival this month.

Dickory Dock is the story of a dying colonel who, after learning that one of his servants plans to murder him, crafts a wily plan to thwart the murderer or murderers. The film, both comic and suspenseful, is 24 minutes long and filmed in 35 mm.

ART DISPLAY: Watercolor paintings by Judy Schneider will be on display in Council Chambers from Aug. 29 to Sept. 29. A reception for the artist will be held on Sept 10 outside the Chambers. The theme, "April in Paris," offers 20 landscapes, based on a trip Schneider took with her daughters and granddaughter last year.

Daughters are Brenda Paciolla, controller of San Jose National Bank, and Robin Bryan, who has a construction business with her husband in Washington State. Granddaughter Lindsey Bryan was 15 at the time of the trip. Schneider herself is on view nearby, since she's an associate librarian at Los Gatos Library.

CHRISTMAS IN AUGUST: You can buy house decorations, cards and tree ornaments at the Christmas in August sale to be held on Aug. 27 and 28 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Discovery Shop, 39 E. Main St. All proceeds go to the American Cancer Society. This event was made possible by Pauline and Richard Lee of Paperfunalia, who donated the supplies to the Discovery Shop. The idea of the special sale came from volunteer Laurel Perusa, reports shop manager Theresa Garcia.

FOR EARLY RISERS: A book discussion group starts on Sept. 8 at 8:30 a.m. at the library. The group will meet on the second Wednesday of each month. For September: Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden.

Other choices are: Oct. 13--Snow Falling on Cedars, David Guterson; Nov. 10--The Bluest Eye, Toni Morrison. There will be no December meeting.

On Jan. 12, 2000--Corelli's Mandolin by Louis de Bernieres; Feb. 9--Stones for Ibarra, Harriet Doerr; March 8--Moon Tiger, Penelope Lively; April 12--Bean Trees, Barbara Kingsolver; May 10--Remembering Babylon, David Malouf; June 14--Crossing to Safety, Wallace Stegner; July 12--Samurai's Garden, Gail Tsukiya. A multicultural list indeed, as befits the opening of a new century and the shrinking of the globe, electronically speaking.
