Shir Hadash invites public to play

Congregation Shir Hadash, located at 16555 Shannon Road in Los Gatos, presents a free one-act play, The Irish Hebrew Lesson, on Sept. 12 at 8 p.m. Set in Cork, Ireland, in 1921, the play relates a late-night encounter between an Irish boy and an elderly Jewish man. The boy is fleeing from the notorious Black and Tans, while the man is studying in his attic sanctuary during the Sabbath.

The meeting turns into a learning experience for both.

Playwright Wolf Mankowitz, who is also an author, is best known for his work with popular screenplays such as the James Bond classic Casino Royale. The Irish Hebrew Lesson was originally performed in London in 1978 as "lunch-hour theater" by actors from the Jewish Living Theatre.

Staged and directed by Debi Greenburg, the performance features Arnold Pinck as the man and Darren Korb, a Bellarmine College Preparatory student, as the boy.

A dessert reception follows at 9:30 p.m. and a Slichot service at 10 p.m., featuring the High Holiday Choir. All are welcome to attend. For more information, call 358-1751.
