LGHS students place in writers competition

Sylvia Benson and David Hembry, both of Los Gatos High School, were recently honored at the Villa Montalvo 1998 Young Writers Competition held in the Oval Garden at Villa Montalvo.

Benson took third place in the poetry category for her poem "Two Minutes," and Hembry won first place in the prose category for his short story "Never Did."

Calvary names scholarship winners

Los Gatos High School senior Lynsie Tanguay won the Valerie Lynn Pfeiffer Memorial Scholarship this year. Tanguay has been active in the school ministry at Cavalry Church, both in service and leadership activities, and plans to attend Asuza Pacific College in Southern California in the fall. The scholarship is named for Los Gatos High School graduate Valerie Pfeiffer, who died in an auto accident in 1988. Some 50 friends and relatives of Pfeiffer joined together to establish the scholarship, which assists promising students who are dedicated to the same ideals that guided Valerie's life.

PHS student spends summer in Japan

Julia Karr recently received a scholarship for a summer experience through Youth for Understanding International Exchange from Mitsubishi Electric America.

The Presentation High School student is spending her summer living with a host family in Japan and immersing herself in the country's culture.

LGHS teacher in Princeton program

Los Gatos High School biology teacher Steve Hammack spent four weeks in July participating in the Leadership Program for Teachers of the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship, funded by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

Hammack was one of 39 teachers nationwide to participate in the program, held on the Princeton University campus in Princeton, N.J. The program allows teachers to learn and experience recent research and teaching approaches in high school biology and is taught by professors and researchers.

As part of the fellowship program, Hammack is expected to share what he learned with other teachers.

Cynthia Ranii goes to Harvard

Los Gatos-Saratoga Joint Union High School District Superintendent Cynthia Ranii recently participated in the Harvard Seminar for New Superintendents at Harvard Graduate School of Education in Cambridge, Mass.

The seminar, held in late June, focused on preparing new superintendents and superintendents in their first year in new positions to meet the educational, managerial and political challenges of leading a new district.

As one of 47 superintendents at the weeklong event, Ranii also learned about topics ranging from governance and financial management to conflict negotiation and media relations.

High school district has free lunch program

The Los Gatos-Saratoga Joint Union High School District announced it is participating in the free and reduced-price meal program under the National School Lunch Program.

Los Gatos High School has a copy of the program policy for review. Those interested can pick up a free-lunch application in the principal's office or use the application form recently sent to residences by the district office. The completed applications can be submitted any time during the year and must be returned to LGHS. Information provided on the form will be used to determine if the student is eligible for free or reduced-price lunches.

Los Gatan elected to Phi Beta Kappa

Christine Schellenberg, a 1994 graduate of Leigh High School, was recently elected to the national academic honor society Phi Beta Kappa. Schellenberg graduated from Whitman College in Walla Walla ,Wash., this past May with a degree in foreign languages and literature. She is the daughter of Carl and Joyce Schellenberg on Los Gatos.
