Los Gatos Weekly-TimesNews BriefsTime for coffee with the mayor In San Francisco, people who want to chat with Da Mayor start lining up outside the War Memorial Building in the dead of night, and at 7 a.m. the first 25 are chosen for 15 minutes with His Williness. Not so in Monte Sereno, where residents who want to chat with Mayor Suzanne Jackson are invited to City Hall for coffee (and bagels) with the mayor Sept. 11 at 9:30 p.m. Bring questions, ideas, complaints, and any other concerns relating to the City of Monte Sereno. It's that easy. Chambers due for new benches When the Civic Center complex was completed in 1967, the Town Council Chambers came with a set of brand-new bright-orange benches. Almost 32 years later, the benches are still there--but not for long. Town officials recently began sending out the benches for some new upholstery. This time, it's something between beige and taupe. Los Gatos Porch owner Larry Arzie, who sold and installed the original benches when he worked for Western Contractors in San Jose as a young man, can't figure out why, after only 32 years, they need replacing. "It's held up perfectly well," he said, "I'd rather see that money go to repair the streets." But Town Manager Dave Knapp thinks it's about time to retire the bright orange. "We've been talking about it for years," he said. The new benches aren't the only improvement planned for the Council Chambers. Part of the room will be getting new carpeting, the current podium will be replaced, possibly with a movable podium that would leave more room during large meetings, and the curved railing on either side of the podium will be scrapped.
