Los Gatos Weekly-TimesThe ProwlerRodent-appreciation parties and pig-kissing shindigs--now the Prowler has heard it all! On Sept. 9, the American Diabetes Association holds its first annual Kiss-A-Pig Campaign Celebration from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Columbia Good Samaritan Hospital. Kiss-A-Pig is part of a six-week fundraising campaign that pits community leaders against one another as a wacky way of raising money for the ADA. The goal is to gather the most monetary pledges for the "honor" of kissing the esteemed pig. The porcine theme is significant because insulin was, until recently, derived solely from pig pancreases. Kissing a pig, like hugging a tree, is a symbolic way to say thanks for such a valuable resource. To participate or just to watch, call 369-2244. Even though we felines don't offer any resources other than our selectively given affections, you can still thank us anytime with a friendly scratch behind the ears or a handful of cat treats. Rodent lovers can thank Los Gatan Diane Kipnis for alerting this cat to the presence of the Rat, Mouse & Hamster Fanciers--perhaps one of the best-kept secrets of Cat Town! This group holds a rodent show on Sept. 19 at Woofers & Tweeters Pet Shop, located at 15569 Union Ave. in Downing Center. It begins at 10 a.m and continues until all the little squeakers have been judged. There's still room for entries; call show secretary Dawn Spoolman at 925/625-3588 for info. Spectators are welcome. Although cats are supposed to hunt rodents, the Prowler once had an unlikely friendship with two rats and will always have a soft spot for the beady-eyed, furry friends.
