All-stars learn to win and compete

'It was kind of a life experience'

    They knew how to hit.

They could pitch, catch and throw, and they could run the bases.

But the players on the Los Gatos Little League major division all-star team learned something when they battled through post-season play this summer ... they learned how to compete.

And compete they did! The Los Gatos kids won the district, section and division championships to earn a coveted berth in the Western Regionals in San Bernardino.

"This was a great quest for all the boys," said Los Gatos assistant coach Ric Foley. "It was kind of a life experience."

The Los Gatos all-stars were successful on the diamond, but they took much more away from their summer season than just victories.

"Part of our goal when we set out was to prepare these boys to win each and every game," said Foley. "But we really wanted to focus the kids on competing in every game."

"I think the coaches did an outstanding job," he added. "And I'm incredibly proud of these kids for the way they accepted the challenge of competing on every pitch."

Foley knows something about competing. He was an outstanding pitcher at Leigh High School and went to pitch at Santa Clara University and in the professional ranks. He's a member of the SCU Athletic Hall of Fame.

"We wanted to prepare these boys to be the best 13-year-old players they can be," said Foley. "They just finished the best baseball camp they could ever go through."
