Massive drug bust in hills above Los Gatos

Police seized $31.2 million worth of marijuana plants from Mount Umunhum in the hills above Los Gatos on Aug. 27 and 28. As part of their "raid week," law enforcement officers served search warrants on several sites. Earlier in the summer, an air crew had spotted the Mount Umunhum site on its way to the refueling station in San Jose. Officials from Santa Cruz County and Santa Clara County seized the 7,800 marijuana plants, valued at $4,000 each.

Santa Cruz County Sheriff's spokesman Kim Allyn said that it is not known who grew the plants.

Accidents on Highway 17 stall traffic

On Aug. 29, two separate accidents on northbound Highway 17 caused traffic to back up for several hours. According to CHP officer Gary Hagen, a two-vehicle, non-injury accident occurred at around 6:55 a.m. near the sand pile off the Idylwild Road exit. While officers were investigating that accident, a second accident--also involving two vehicles and no injuries--occurred at 7 a.m. near Alma Bridge Road. Hagen said that the backup was exacerbated by the recent start of the school year.
