Cats lose opener
The Wildcats of the Los Gatos-Saratoga Pop Warner Football organization lost their opener 27-22 to East Bay on Aug. 26 despite an impressive second-half comeback.
The young Cats trailed 14-0 at the half, but scored twice in the third period to cut the East Bay lead to 20-16. Both clubs scored in the final quarter, and the locals came up a TD short, 27-22.
Stefan Fowler sparked the ground effort for the Los Gatos offense and quarterback Richie Scudellari led the air attack. Willy Burns was the squad's top receiver.
Fowler also starred defensively as the top tackler for the Cats.
Catfish Swim
They say the Lexington Reservoir is filled with catfish.
Well, if that's true, then the catfish had their peaceful swimming disturbed for a weekend during the summer when the annual Catfish Open Water Swim returned to the Lexington waters.
Thousands of swimmers splashed across the reservoir in the 1.2-mile and 2.4-mile event. Some of the swimmers were wearing wetsuits, others were nearly as bare as the catfish the race is named for.
Dan Veatch, 36, of San Francisco was the winner in the 1.2-mile skin race with 16-year-old Richie Crowder of Los Gatos a close second. Barbara Crowder, 43, of Los Gatos won the women's 1.2-mile skin race.
In the 1.2-mile wetsuit race, Robert Crowder, 45, of Los Gatos cruised to a first-place finish in the men's division and Cathrin Barsch, 34, was the women's winner.
In the "Team in Training" .6 mile swim, 23-year-old Christine Nelson of Cupertino was the overall women's winner, and 36-year-old William Delveaux won the men's race.
