    Cattolico wins state award

Los Gatos head football coach Butch Cattolico was honored this past summer as a winner of the California Coaches Association award for football.

The association recognizes a coach from each sport every year as the best in the state in his field, and Cattolico was one of just three coaches from the Central Coast Section to be ranked among the 25 winners.

"It was a very nice honor," said Cattolico. "It's really a tribute to the program, which has been strong for a number of years."

A big reason for that strength, though, is Cattolico. In 13 seasons as the Los Gatos head coach, his teams have posted a cumulative 131-36 record (.784 winning percentage), won nine league championships and won five CCS championships.

"But an awful lot of that has to do with the kids and the assistant coaches in the program," he added.

    New cart for Wedemeyer

The Los Gatos football team is hoping to raise the $2,500 necessary to purchase a new golf cart for Charlie Wedemeyer.

Wedemeyer, who has struggled for more than two decades with Lou Gehrig's disease, continues as a member of the Los Gatos football staff, working with the frosh-soph team.

The football program is looking to the community for financial support. Anyone wishing to contribute to the fund to purchase a new golf cart for Coach Wedemeyer can send a donation to Los Gatos Football, c/o Los Gatos High School, 20 High School Court, Los Gatos, CA 95032-6917.
