Police seek information about attempted kidnapping of girl
By Gloria I. Wang
A Leigh High School student was recently the victim of an attempted kidnapping that was thwarted when a Good Samaritan intervened.
The 16-year-old girl, a San Jose resident, was on her way to school the morning of Sept. 5. While the girl was crossing the parking lot of Quick Mart on Leigh Avenue, which is across the street from the high school, she was approached by a Hispanic man in an older, two-door, metallic gray hatchback sedan. The man asked the girl to get in and she refused. He got out of his car, grabbed her arm and attempted to pull her inside the car.
A young man using a nearby pay phone noticed the struggle. He ran to help, yelling at the suspect to release the girl. The suspected kidnapper let the girl go and fled the parking lot in his car. The girl continued on to Leigh High and reported the attempted kidnapping to the school's dean.
School administration called the Los Gatos-Monte Sereno Police Department at approximately 11 a.m. Police took the girl to the station for a follow-up interview and issued a bulletin to various law enforcement agencies throughout the county.
According to a description from the victim, the suspect appears to be between 20 and 30 years old. He has an unshaven mustache and collar-length hair; he is approximately 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighs about 180 pounds. When seen, he was wearing dirty clothes--jeans and a gray T-shirt--and white tennis shoes.
Police want to speak with the young man, who left Quick Mart after the suspect fled, and also with anyone who knows anything related to the attempted kidnapping. Those with information are asked to contact the Los Gatos-Monte Sereno Police Department at 408.354.8600.
