Los Gatos High graduate helps found private school
By Mary Ann Cook
SCHOOL FOUNDER: After 10 years as an attorney in L.A., Karina Brown Hamilton, LGHS grad, turned her considerable energies to education and is one of the driving forces behind the establishment of a new private school in Newport Beach called Sage Hill. The school opened its doors this month.
Brown also helped establish a similar school in Napa. Although private, the schools have a healthy array of scholarships available. And Hamilton is also administering scholarships at U.C. Irvine. She is the daughter of Bob Brown of Los Gatos and Satoko Otsuki of Honolulu and stepdaughter of Lou Rae Kagel.
Brother Chris Brown works for Sun Microsystems and he and his wife Charlene are proud new parents of Douglas Ichiro Brown, all 9 plus pounds of him. Ichiro is Japanese for first born son: both parents are half Japanese.
SUMMER OLYMPICS: In the competition known as Police and Fire Summer Olympics Capt. Alana Forrest of the Los Gatos-Monte Sereno PD won three gold medals in the three events she entered. She completed the triathlon in 2 hours, 7 minutes, 35 seconds, winning first for females.
The triathlon consists of a three-quarter mile swim, 21-mile bike race and 6.2 mile run. In the Cycling Time Trial Forrest was again first place winner in all age categories for women with a time of 46 minutes, 40 seconds. In the Cycling Road Race, a 26-mile bicycle race, she won first in her age group, second overall.
Note: that's three exhausting contests in four days. Other LGMSPD entrants were officer Jon Atkinson, who won a bronze medal in golf and detective Randy Bishop, whose mixed FBI squad made it to the quarter finals in roller hockey. Officer Sam Wonnell and detection dog Quarz won 7th in searching.
Quarz found the suspect in 36 seconds He also sniffed out all the drugs in the narcotic detection competition, though he did not medal. The Olympics event drew 7,000 competitors statewide. San Jose was the host and track and field events were held at the LGHS field.
MOUNTAIN SCHOOLS REUNION: Bob Wilson put together a reunion for three mountain grammar schools, now defunct. The event, held at Bill Radonich's mountain home, drew 71 people. A committee of Wilson, his brother Don, Warren Davis, and Bill and Andy Radonich searched down the alums.
It wasn't easy, since the schools--Burrell, Highland and Hester Creek--are no longer in existence. The Burrell School building is now a winery and community centers sit on the sites of Highland and Hester Creek schools.
The oldest guest was Kate Radonich, mother of Bill and Andy, who will turn 100 on Jan. 1, '02. Oldest attending grads were Fred Walters, 95, and Eloise Fidel Adams and Emma Mae Rapp Lydon, both in their early 90s. Augie Suess and his wife, Dorothy Williams Suess swept the other awards.
They won for coming the farthest: from Yam Hill, Ore., for most number of children and most grandchildren. Fred Walters, the eldest male, answered requests for a song with his rendition of I Had But 50 Cents, which in those grammar school days was nothing to sneer at.
Most of the grads hadn't seen each other for 50 or 60 years. Bill Radonich lives in a redwood grove, has a good-sized barbecue on wheels. There'll be a repeat in two years.
