The Prowler
One of the pitfalls of working for a weekly newspaper is the difficulty of telling folks that they just missed the deadline for next week's paper, and that the following week would be too late to run an article about their event. Fortunately, The Prowler never has to be the bearer of bad news, but rather the one who saves the day!
A case in point is the press release received last Thursday (deadline!) about longtime Los Gatan Alrie Middlebrook, an award-winning landscape and garden designer and an authority on California native plants. She's also the owner and operator of the appropriately named Middlebrook Gardens in San Jose. Although there was no time or space for staffers to pursue a feature angle, they were wise enough to share the info with this column-writing cat.
Middlebrook will be speaking at two separate venues. On Sept. 12, she'll discuss "California Natives in Style" at Loyola School in Los Altos. On Sept. 15 and 16, she'll speak on "Going Native: Bringing nature into the Garden" at Tilden Park in Berkeley. Although these are not local, Middlebrook is. Also, the Prowler happens to be a die-hard greenthumb (greenpaw?), which is another reason for plugging these cool events! The Prowler doesn't have phone numbers for the venues, but interested folks can call 408.294.2712--the number of the P.R. firm that faxed the info.
Speaking of plugs, here's one for a very good cause--the Friends of the Los Gatos Library. On Sept. 15, the group will hold a sale of gently used books from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the library. Call 408.354.6891.
