Ron's Wildlife Run returns
By Dick Sparrer
The 18th annual Ron's Wildlife Run, a benefit for the Youth Science Institute, returns to Vasona Park on Sept. 16, 7 a.m. The event features three different races: a 10K run, a 5K stride and a 2K kids event.
The race originated in 1984 under the direction of YSI board member Ron Becker. After his untimely death, fellow runner Jack Hubby took over leadership of the event.
This year, Hubby turns over the reins to Megan Jellinek, and the race is dedicated to the memory of Ron Becker.
The 5K run remains entirely inside Vasona Park with the 10K winding out of the park, onto Los Gatos side streets, onto the Los Gatos Creek Trail and back into the park. Both courses are relatively flat. The kids' 2K race will be on a flat, loop course.
The start-finish line for all three races will be in the same location at the front of the park. There are T-shirts for the first 800 participants.
The suggested race donation is $25. This year's race is sponsored by Philips Semiconductor and all race proceeds benefit the YSI's science and nature centers at Sanborn, Vasona and Alum Rock parks.
The race features live music, chip timing with on-the-spot race results, live animal exhibits, a race warm up hosted by the Bay Area CyberRays, and gourmet treats from such local vendors as Willow Street Pizza and Dolce Spazio.
