Panthers, Cougars roll to victories in Pop Warner
By Dick Sparrer
Brett Kundtz scored a pair of touchdowns and Kelly Peterson and Jake Schonig scored one each to lead the Los Gatos Panthers to a 29-0 win over Cambrian Valley in area Pop Warner Football play.
Kundtz hauled in a 25-yard touchdown pass from Spencer Lopes and he also returned a pass interception 37 yards for a score to lead the Panthers to the win.
Schonig gave Gatos an early lead with a 4-yard touchdown run in the first period, then ran in for the extra point.
The Panthers up their lead to 13-0 when Peterson pulled in a pass from Nick Della Rocchetta and rambled down the field to complete a 77-yard touchdown play.
Matt Perrone kicked a pair of 2-point conversions to round out the scoring for Los Gatos.
The Panthers ran up 235 yards on total offense in the win, and they were equally as impressive defensively--shutting down the Cambrian offense.
Schonig was the top tackler for the locals. Linebackers Nick Kalpin and Chris Evan played well defensively along with Kundtz. Della Rocchetta recovered a Cambrian fumble that was forced by Kellan Barker.
A day later, the Cougars knocked off Cambrian Valley 20-14 to improve to 2-0 in the young season.
Jacob Whitaker scored on an 8-yard run early in the second half to break a 14-14 and lead the Cougars to the win.
A 45-yard run by Stefan Fowler set up a 6-yard TD dash by Cameron Compton to give the Cougars an early 6-0 lead, but Cambrian scored and kicked a 2-point conversion to move in front 8-6.
The Cougars fell back 14-6 in the second quarter, but tied the game before the half. Jefrey West scored on a 6-yard run and Richie Scudellari kicked the 2-pointer to knot the score 14-14 by intermission.
Whitaker's touchdown broke the tie, and the Cougars shut down Cambrian the rest of the way. Kevin McCarty was the top tackler in the win and Jake Viramontez also played well for the Cougars.
Honor for Lightning
The Los Gatos Lightning, a boys under-11 select soccer team in the Los Gatos United Soccer League, finished fourth overall and was awarded the sportsmanship trophy at the Jack London Bay Oaks Soccer Tournament held Sept. 5-6 in Oakland.
The Lighting knocked off teams from Oakland and Ajax United in Modesto, but lost close decisions to River City of Sacramento and Turlock.
"With all that's written these days about ugly behavior in youth sports, this award means a lot to us," said Lightning head coach David deMilo of the sportsmanship trophy. "Coaches and parents here are returning to towns far away saying great things about that team from Los Gatos."
Hockey tryouts
The Silicon Valley Quakes will hold tryouts for their 10-and-under and 12-and-under roller hockey teams on Sept. 17, 8 a.m.-10 a.m., at Rollin' Ice at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds.
Tryouts are open to players from throughout the valley. The Quakes will field traveling tournament teams in the 10-and-under mite (players born before Jan. 1, 1990) and 12-and-under squirt (players born before Jan. 1, 1988) age divisions.
