    The Prowler

Although the Prowler is a computer-savvy cat who enjoys typing, the Prowler's heart lies in the out-of-doors, a response to those feral feline instincts lying not far beneath the domesticated surface.

One of this cat's favorite outdoor activities is climbing trees. Used to be that all trees looked alike to this feline, but not anymore. One reason is What Tree is That?, a free guide from the National Arbor Day Foundation. More than 150 deciduous and evergreen trees are included. Even though Arbor Day is past this year, the guide remains. To get one, write to What Tree is That?, NADF, 100 Arbor Ave., Nebraska City, Neb., 68410

For folks who consider themselves green thumbs, the University of California Cooperative Extension program has just the thing--Master Gardener designation! After completing the UCCE Master Gardener Training Program, individuals devote at least 100 hours per year to volunteering with various horticultural projects and demonstration gardens in Santa Clara County. Some also staff the Master Gardener Hotline (408.299.2638), which offers advice to callers with gardening problems. For an application or more info, call 408.299.2635, ext. 1004, or visit www.mastergardeners.org/quiz.html on the Internet.

Speaking of wood, the Gallery at Villa Montalvo is gearing up for a new exhibit by Bay Area artist Jeff King. One of the centerpieces is Blossom and Four Balls, a large wooden sculpture. He also makes artistic prints struck from simple wooden forms. The exhibit runs Sept. 20-Oct. 22, with a Sept. 16 preview and reception from 3 to 5 p.m. The gallery is at 15400 Montalvo Road, Saratoga. Call 408.961.5813 for details.
